Dubai Truck Ban 2026: Roads, Timings and What It Means for Furniture Delivery

RTA and Dubai Police announced truck movement restrictions across Dubai from 1 October 2026. Several of these roads already had restrictions. They are not a blanket ban. Whether a delivery is affected depends on three things: the vehicle, the route, and the time of day.

Furniture pickup and delivery in Dubai is still operating. Some jobs now need more careful planning. This guide covers the restricted roads and timings, the pickup truck question, reported penalties, and how to avoid delays.

What Changed on 1 October 2026?

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police introduced restrictions on truck and heavy-vehicle movement on selected roads. The stated aims are to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, increase road capacity and improve road safety, while keeping commercial goods moving. Rules vary by road, area and time period. A vehicle travelling between two Dubai addresses may be restricted on one route and unaffected on another.

See note below

Exempt from this decision (RTA, 26 Sept 2026). A separate evening peak restriction towards Sharjah has been in effect since January 2025, so check it before booking.

Why the Full Route Matters

A truck can be affected even when neither the pickup nor the delivery address is in a restricted area. A route that crosses a restricted crossing, uses the Airport Tunnel, or passes through a peak-period corridor may need rerouting or rescheduling. That is why the complete route needs checking, not just the two addresses.

Is Emirates Road Exempt?

Emirates Road is exempt from the new October 2026 decision. That doesn’t mean every section is unrestricted. An existing restriction (effective since 1 January 2025) applies to the Sharjah-bound section between Al Awir Road and Sharjah, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Check by direction and section.

Dubai Truck Ban

Does the Dubai Truck Ban Apply to Pickup Trucks?

This is the most common question, and the honest answer is that it depends on classification.

The RTA announcement refers to heavy vehicles, truck drivers, truck owners, and transport and freight companies. It does not publish a simple statement that every vehicle commonly called a “pickup” is included or excluded. A small pickup, a larger commercial pickup, and a medium truck can all be classified differently.

RTA’s announcement doesn’t define light pickups. Check your vehicle’s registered classification

Tare Weight vs. Gross Vehicle Weight

Part of the confusion comes from two different measurements:

  • Tare weight: the weight of the empty vehicle.
  • Gross vehicle weight (GVW): the permitted or actual total weight when loaded.

They are not interchangeable. Until the authorities publish clearer guidance for light pickups, the safest approach is to check the vehicle’s registered classification rather than assuming it is covered or exempt.

How the Restrictions Can Affect Furniture Delivery

Affected jobs usually need extra planning rather than cancellation. In practice, that can mean:

  • Different delivery times: a heavy vehicle may need to travel before or after a restricted period.
  • Alternative routes: the shortest route on a map may not be available to a restricted vehicle, which can add distance and time.
  • Waiting time: if a truck arrives early at a restricted corridor, it should wait at a suitable location, not on a main road or residential street.
  • Building access issues: service-lift bookings, loading-bay rules, parking limits, and security check-ins can all be thrown off by a route delay.
  • Tighter same-day jobs: when pickup and delivery happen on the same day, a restricted route can affect both legs.

Will It Make Furniture Delivery More Expensive?

Not automatically. No published pricing data shows a fixed or percentage increase caused by the October 2026 restrictions. Individual jobs may involve longer routes, off-peak scheduling, or extra waiting time, and whether that changes the price depends on the vehicle, route, distance, and provider. Ask for a quote that states the delivery time and any vehicle or access conditions.See our [furniture delivery cost in Dubai]

Dubai Truck Ban Fines and Penalties

The RTA announcement says operators must follow restriction timings, use permitted alternative routes, and avoid random parking on main roads, residential areas, and undesignated spaces. It does not publish a complete fine table for the new restrictions.

Some secondary sources report the following heavy-vehicle penalties:

Reported violation

Reported penalty

Driving during restricted hours

AED 1,000 + 4 black points

Mandatory lane violation

AED 1,500 + 12 black points

Entering a prohibited area

AED 1,000 + 4 black points

Illegal roadside parking

AED 5,000–200,000, depending on the violation

Overloading

AED 2,000–20,000 + 6 black points, depending on the violation

Repeat or non-compliant offences

Possible additional enforcement, including vehicle impoundment

Treat these as reported heavy-vehicle penalties, not a confirmed fine for every breach of the October 2026 restrictions. Verify current penalties with the RTA or Dubai Police. Customers should never ask a driver to use a restricted road to save time.

Can a Company Get a Permit for Restricted Hours?

Yes. The RTA offers a Mobility Permit for Heavy Vehicles in Banned Times and Roads, handled through its Right-of-Way (ROW) Department. It is intended for eligible companies and contractors whose operations genuinely require heavy-vehicle movement on banned routes or at banned times. It is not a permit an individual customer can request because a delivery is inconvenient.

Where Can Trucks Wait During Restricted Hours?

The RTA has designated truck rest areas for use during restricted periods. According to the authority:

  • More than 150,000 trucks use these rest stops each month.
  • Dubai records roughly 400,000 truck journeys per day.
  • Seven rest stops gained 364 extra parking spaces, bringing their combined capacity to 1,007 spaces.

Areas That Need Extra Timing Attention

Al Mizhar, Muhaisnah and Oud Al Muteena

These areas fall under the 6:00 AM–10:00 PM restriction, so affected heavy vehicles may need to arrive outside that window or use a suitable vehicle and route. Deliveries still happen, but timing needs to be agreed carefully. Confirm any service-lift or loading slot first.

Dubai to Sharjah Moves

Cross-emirate moves need more route planning because several key corridors are subject to restrictions, including:

  • Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road
  • Emirates Road
  • Airport Street and Damascus Street
  • Routes around Al Mizhar, Muhaisnah and Oud Al Muteena
  • Dubai–Sharjah crossings

A road being open to ordinary cars does not mean it is open to every commercial truck at every hour.

How to Avoid Furniture Delivery Delays

You do not need to master the regulations yourself. You need to give your provider the right information and ask the right questions.

  • Exact pickup and delivery areas (the pickup location can face different restrictions from the destination)
  • Preferred date and time
  • Building name or type, plus service-lift, loading and parking rules
  • Furniture type, dimensions and quantity
  • Whether there are multiple pickup points

What to Ask Your Provider

  • Which vehicle will be used, and is it classified as a heavy vehicle?
  • Does the planned route include any restricted roads?
  • Does my requested time fall within a restricted period?
  • If an alternative route is needed, will the time or price change?
  • What happens if the truck reaches a restricted area before it is allowed to enter?

 Practical Tips

  • Book building access first. Secure the service-lift slot before locking in a delivery time.
  • Build in a buffer. Avoid back-to-back appointments for tenancy handovers, move-out deadlines or renovation schedules.
  • Let the provider choose the route. Just ask whether the vehicle and route comply with current restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions

It might, but only if the vehicle is classed as a heavy vehicle and its route or timing falls inside a restriction. Ask your mover which vehicle they are sending, which roads it will use and whether your time slot overlaps a restricted period. Most jobs can still go ahead with a different route or time.

The October 2026 announcement refers to heavy vehicles and does not give a simple rule for every pickup. Earlier RTA restrictions were based on a tare (empty) weight above 2.5 tonnes, but the new announcement does not restate that threshold, so don't rely on it. Ask the company for the registered vehicle class and whether they have confirmed it with RTA.

It can be. Sheikh Zayed Road, Beirut Street, Al Mizhar, Muhaisnah and Oud Al Muteena are restricted from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, so an affected truck may have to operate outside those hours. If a night slot doesn't suit you, ask whether a smaller permitted vehicle could do the job during the day.

Deliveries still happen, but a heavy vehicle may not be allowed in these areas between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM. The provider may use a different vehicle or arrive outside those hours. Confirm this before booking, not on the day.

Not automatically, and no fixed increase has been published. A longer route, off-peak scheduling or extra waiting time could affect the price of an individual job. Ask for a quote that states the delivery time, the vehicle and what happens if the route changes.

Late arrival is the main risk, because many buildings charge or reschedule if you miss the slot. Book the lift first, share the slot with your mover and allow a buffer. Ask what happens if the truck is held up at a restricted corridor.

Yes, but plan the route. Emirates Road is exempt from the new decision, but a separate evening restriction applies to the Sharjah-bound section between Al Awir Road and Sharjah from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Other corridors on this route, such as Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, may also have peak-hour limits, so check by direction and time of day.

That depends on your contract, so ask before booking. The driver and company are responsible for following the restrictions, and you should never ask a driver to take a restricted road to save time. Reported heavy-vehicle fines are around AED 1,000 plus 4 black points for driving in restricted hours, but the RTA has not published a full fine table for the new rules.

Not usually. The RTA's Mobility Permit for Heavy Vehicles in Banned Times and Roads is for eligible companies and contractors in essential cases, not for customer convenience. A better option is to move the time slot or change the vehicle.

Emirates Road is exempt from the new October 2026 decision. The older evening restriction on the Sharjah-bound section between Al Awir Road and Sharjah (5:30 PM to 8:00 PM) still applies.

Sources and Update Information

Bottom Line

Dubai’s October 2026 truck restrictions change how some heavy-vehicle journeys are planned, but they do not stop furniture pickup and delivery. Focus on the vehicle, the route and the time of day, and make sure the delivery window also works with your building’s loading, parking and service-lift rules.
